Winchester Creatives – May 2017 Edition

9th May 2017

Can you believe it’s been a whole week since we all met up? Again. ;)

It’s always a pleasure to host Winchester Creatives. It’s a great excuse to see old friends, and, of course, to make new ones. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who comes along to our monthly get-togethers.

Last month we were treated to an excellent talk by regular attendee - and good friend of the Studio - UX expert Eddie Rich, who gave us an overview of what UX design means, and how it is important to get it right in the physical world as well as digitally. There were some great examples of bad UX, where Eddie invited us to sketch out how we might improve certain functionality in an app. Most of all there was chocolate. And who doesn’t love chocolate? ;) We thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward very much to having Eddie along to give another presentation at some point.

This month we were delighted to be joined by David Burton - Head of Innovation at Redweb - for his highly amusing and informative presentation on “Learning Through Making”: a whirlwind tour of some successful (and otherwise!) technology he and his small but perfectly formed team (aka Brandon Hawkes) have been tinkering with.

We heard about a variety of topics such as adventures with his belly button fluff (of which there SURELY has to be marketable use for!) to a UV level detection alarm, via a singing Lionel Ritchie head, a sinister Elvis that follows you down the road, a beer dispensing, brain-powered hat, and much more! You really, really had to be there. :D You can see more of these weird and wonderful creations on the Redweb Labs website. Go take a look. It’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed. :)

A jar of belly button fluff. That's right.

If ever you get the chance to hear David (or Eddie!) give a talk, we highly recommend you do so.

Special thanks, as ever, go out to Matt, manager at The Stable, Winchester for keeping us fed.

We have a diverse range of excellent speakers lined up for the coming months - more details of which will emerge nearer the time. If you’d like to give it a go, give me a shout! Email me at graham@studiorepublic.com or Tweet me at @winchcreatives, where I will post news and information whenever possible.

Remember we aim to hold these events on the first Tuesday of every month. We hope to see you all at our next one on 6th June. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook to be kept up to date.
