Studio Republic sponsors London based art project
Studio Republic were approached by London-based art collective, The Hut Project and asked to help them out with the web requirements of their latest project.
Entitled "The Hut Project: New Contemporaries", the project will result in a video archive of interviews of 478 artists who have exhibited in the annual New Contemporaries art graduate competition over the last two decades. The interviews will be conducted by graduating art students who are currently eligible to apply for the competition.
The work, which will be in production over the next three years, aims to examine what it might mean to be a young artist graduating from college into a contemporary art world that is shaped by influential competitions such as New Contemporaries. In effect, The Hut Project are using the New Contemporaries competition as a lens through which to survey cultural shifts of the last two decades, in the UK, and assess the implications of those shifts on young aspiring artists today.
The Hut Project: New Contemporaries will be a collection of video interviews with artists who exhibited in the annual New Contemporaries graduate competition between 1989 and 2006. These interviews will be conducted by a team of graduating art students who are eligible to apply for the competition, currently being selected by The Hut Project through a series of talks at UK art schools and an open submission process.
Studio Republic have provided a survey microsite for the project, allowing artists to log their interest in the project and the other previous exhibitors they are aware of. The data captured is then fed back to The Hut Project both on an online reporting tool and as an on-demand Excel spreadsheet. This allows the client up to view the status of the survey at any time.
